Respected Garfield Elementary Community,
I hope all is well with you. It was great to see so many parents at the Visual and Performing Arts Program that took place at Bell Gardens High School earlier this month. Our Garfield band displayed great talent and understanding of music as they not only played but read music from a chart. Congratulations to Mr. Horta who has done an outstanding job of teaching our students. I’d like to thank Mr. Mendoza from BGI who was kind enough to work with GAE students as they performed with the incredible BGI dancers.
I want to thank Vanessa Villa and the ICES coaches who chaperoned our GATE field trip to UCLA. The gymnastics event and the campus tour was a wonderful experience. The guides at UCLA always treat MUSD students with great respect, and it’s always a privilege to visit the Bruin campus. I also want to thank Mr. Sandoval and Mrs. Sanchez who organized the 4th and 5th grade GATE field trip to the Music Center.
Mrs. Keck and Mrs. Suzuki’s visit to the Hollywood Bowl was also a wonderful opportunity for our 3rd grade students. Thank you to all the parents who helped make that a very special event.
Dr. Grover Bravo offered two very informative workshops to our parents on March 14 and March 21. I was very happy to see that so many of our parents took advantage of the opportunity to listen to Dr. Bravo speak on parent/child communication and discipline at home. Parents were extremely appreciative, and Dr. Bravo delivered very practical and valuable lessons for all parents to live by.
State testing will begin the week of March 20. I’d like to remind parents that it’s very important that our students are getting to bed early. They need to get plenty of rest and have a good breakfast before testing each day. Please ensure that your children are getting the rest and nutrition that they need to make their testing experience successful.
Finally, it’s very important that parents walk to school to pick up their children at the end of each school day. If you have to drive to school, please see Lupe in the main office to request a bus pass so that you can pick up your children at Ford Park Adult School where there is space for up to 120 cars to park. The pick-up process in front of our school is much safer when there are fewer cars to add to the congestion on Garfield Avenue. Walking is not only safer, but it’s also much healthier. Thank you again for all of your support and all that we do for our children.
Mr. David Hernandez
