Principal's Message

Dear Garfield Elementary Community,

I hope you all enjoyed a restful spring break.  It was nice to see so many parents and students at the Discover Showcase that took place at Montebello High School on March 24th.  We truly appreciate all of your support.  Garfield Elementary was very well represented.  We’re all very grateful to Ms. Alex Chavez, our new ICES Coordinator, for working with our students in both music and dance.  It’s great to have Alex back!

I also want to thank the ICES coaches and parents who helped chaperone our Honor Society field trip to UCLA.  It was a great event, and the UCLA Women’s basketball game was an outstanding experience for our students.   All of our 5th graders will be doing their annual campus tour of UCLA when we return from spring break.  It’s always a very positive event.

Our teachers have spent a great deal of time participating in professional development in both Language Arts and Math throughout the year.  Language Arts teachers have focused on Benchmark Advance training.  While our Math teachers have focused on Eureka Math curriculum.  Though the content has been very challenging for our students, we’re confident that our student will be better prepared for the state test.

State testing will begin the week of April 16th.  Please remember to put your children to bed early.  It’s important that they get plenty of rest and have a good breakfast before testing each day.  Please be sure that your children are getting the rest and nutrition that they need to make their testing experience a success.

Finally, quite a few Garfield parents have noticed the solar panels at the ATC and other school in our district.  I’d like to announce that construction of the solar panels at Garfield Elementary is set to begin the week of April 19th, and as much as we look forward to everything that the new technology will bring, we have to prepare ourselves for the temporary inconvenience of the construction.  Please plan to attend Coffee with the Principal on April 17th at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria to further discuss our plans for parking during the solar panel project.

Thank you again for your continued support,

Mr. David Hernandez
